Council Statement on Capitol Violence and Intolerance

The West Linn City Council read the following statement at their January 25, 2021 meeting:

The City of West Linn strongly condemns the shameful acts of violence and intimidation that recently took place in Washington D.C. and at Oregon’s Capitol Building. While political free speech is a constitutional right, these violent assaults that threaten our democracy are not. What we have been witnessing has no place in our great State or Nation. We share our deepest condolences for all those whose lives were lost as a result of this senseless violence.

The City of West Linn does not condone any such acts of violence, harassment, hatred or intolerance. Our strength as a nation is built on the diversity of all who call it home.

We, thereby, further denounce the racist and offensive statements of Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull, and fully support Clackamas County Commissioners in their censure and call for his resignation. There is no place in leadership for those that do not serve from a place of inclusivity, fairness, and without bias. West Linn will not stand for intolerance.

We continue to work unwaveringly to address racial, social, and political injustice in our own community and ask that you join us. We are committed to anti-racist policies and practices and deeply value diversity, equity, and inclusion in all forms. In the midst of a global pandemic, political strife, and so many other challenges to humanity, we need to be focused on finding common ground. We must work together to keep our City, State, and Country a peaceful, healthy, and thriving place for all.
